Can You Make Money Building Apps with AI?

Is there real money in building apps with AI tools? Here's what's actually working and what's just noise.

By Kaden · August 14, 2025

Someone in my DMs last week: “I keep seeing people claim they’re making $10k/month with AI-built apps. Is any of this real?”

Fair question. The internet is full of screenshots that might be real or might be Photoshop. Let me give you the honest picture.

The short answer

Yes, people are making money — real money — building apps with AI tools. But the money usually doesn’t come from where you’d expect.

The fantasy: build an app, put it on the app store, passive income forever.

The reality: most of the money is in services, custom work, and solving specific problems for specific people.

What actually works

Freelance development. Building apps for clients who can’t build for themselves. AI tools let you deliver faster and take on more projects. Rates are still high because the market doesn’t care how you built it — only that it works.

Internal tools for businesses. Companies will pay well for custom dashboards, automation tools, or workflow apps. These aren’t sexy consumer products, but the checks clear.

Micro-SaaS. Tiny software products that solve one specific problem for a narrow audience. $29/month x 100 customers = meaningful revenue. AI makes these viable to build solo.

Templates and starting points. Selling the scaffolding so others can build faster. Landing page templates, boilerplates, starter kits.

What usually doesn’t work

Building “the next big thing.” Consumer apps competing with well-funded startups. The building is the easy part. The distribution is nearly impossible.

Undifferentiated products. “It’s like Notion, but built by me.” Why would anyone switch? Technical ability to build isn’t a business advantage when AI gives everyone that ability.

Building first, finding customers later. Spend months building, launch to crickets. The pattern repeats endlessly. Finding the audience needs to happen before or during the build, not after.

The skills that matter

Building the app is table stakes now. AI handles that. The scarce skills are elsewhere:

  • Identifying problems worth solving
  • Finding people who’ll pay to solve them
  • Communicating value clearly
  • Getting attention in crowded markets
  • Closing sales and keeping customers

These are business skills, not coding skills. Most people building with AI still underinvest in them.

The realistic path

Most people making money building apps with AI didn’t start with a product idea. They started with a service — helping someone else with something specific.

The service teaches you what people actually need. What they’ll pay for. What problems are real versus imagined. Eventually, patterns emerge. “I keep building the same thing for different clients.” That’s when productizing makes sense.

Jump straight to product and you’re guessing. Start with service and you’re learning.

“The best product ideas come from doing the work, not thinking about it.”

What the successful people have in common

After talking to dozens of people actually making money this way, a few patterns:

They pick narrow niches. Not “productivity app” but “invoice tracker for freelance designers.” Narrow means less competition, easier marketing, clearer messaging.

They ship fast and iterate. Version one is embarrassing. They put it out anyway. Customer feedback guides version two.

They build audiences alongside products. Twitter, YouTube, newsletters, communities. Distribution isn’t an afterthought.

They treat it like a business, not a hobby. Pricing decisions, customer support, financial tracking. The boring stuff that actually matters.

Starting point

If you want to make money building apps with AI, don’t start with “what app should I build?” Start with “who has a problem I can solve, and would they pay me?”

Find that person. Talk to them. Understand their problem deeply. Then build something.

The building is the easy part now. The business thinking is what separates people who make money from people who just make apps.
